Pécs starts Preparations for 2014 WUC Wrestling

PÉCS - The opening meeting of the Organising Committee for the 2014 World University Wrestling Championships was held in the city of Pécs with the representatives from the University of Pécs, the municipality, the Hungarian Wrestling Federation and the Hungarian University Sports Federation.

In his welcome speech Prof. Gyula Zeller, the Vice-President of the University of Pécs emphasised that sport enjoys top priority in the institute’s life just as in today’s Hungary. „We will give everything needed to host a great event, this showcase will be part of our city ‘s life as we expect almost 300 athletes attending the Championship“, he added.

Csaba Hédi, the General Secretary of the Hungarian University Sports Federation said it was a great pleasure to have Pécs joining the long line of Hungarian cities which had already hosted World University Championships in the past 25 years. „This will be the 14th World University Championship since 1986 and I think we can expect several hundreds of guests from all over the world as Europe and Hungary is a popular destination for the University athletes.“ He added they would suggest June-July 2014 as the date of the event toFISU.

Eszter Moór, Chair of the Municipality’s Sports Committee paid thanks to those being involved in the successful bidding campaign to earn the right of hosting this event. „We regard sport as a key area in the life of our city“ she said. „We do our utmost to guarantee the developing of sport even in these tougher times.“ Ms. Moór announced that the municipality was currently working on the city’s future sport-strategy and this procedure was headed by a two-time Olympic Champion, Attila Vári (a former water polo player who was silver-medallist at the 1995 Summer Universiade).

Tamás Gáspár, the General Secretary of the Hungarian Wrestling Federation – also a former Olympic medallist – recalled some great data as they had hosted 10 World and European Championships in the past fifteen years:„We have compiled an enormous pool of experience in organising great international meets. We are proud that we can contribute to another great show, this time in 2014. The world of wrestling has got used to enjoy the highest level of hospitality and professionalism at our events so I can promise we will do our best and give whatever needed to maintain this level in two and a half years. The world should come to Pécs and the world should leave the city satisfied.“

The operative work is going to be headed by Tamás Téczeli, chief of the University’s Sport Centre who said they wanted to be worthy of the title „City of Wrestling“ Pécs had earned two years ago. The main test event will be the national university championships in 2013.
