2017 Universiades Attributed

FISU President Gallien with the Almaty delegation

BRUSSELS Today, November 29th, theFISU Executive Committee attributed the Universiades for 2017. The event was staged at the Hotel Dolce La Hulpe in the outskirts of Brussels, Belgium.

It was a nerve wrecking Tuesday for the candidate cities as the day started early with the final presentations of each city. Almaty remained the only bidding city for the 2017 Winter Universiade with Trentino withdrawing last week due to the dire economic situation inItaly.

The Almaty delegation

In the morning session, the delegates of Almaty, chaired by Almaty Mayor Akhmetzhan Yesimov, presented the trumps for choosing their city as host of the Winter University Games. A strong bidding candidate and former host of the 2011 Asian Winter Games, the FISUEC was confident in granting Almaty the 28th Winter Universiade.

‘The 2017 Winter Universiade is an amazing opportunity for Almaty to promote its image as a new winter sports destination and to develop university sports in our city, our country and our region’, Almaty delegate Pavel Shegay said. ‘The bidding process was very exciting, and our team was very enthusiast in working out key reasons to choose Almaty as a new host city for Winter Universiade that are based on FISU philosophy and humanistic values. Unfortunately, our colleagues and competitors from Trentino decided to withdraw its candidature at the almost final stage. Competition with Trentino was very spectacular, intriguing and very useful for us. Nevertheless, we see brilliant prospects for all member countries of FISU to achieve outstanding results in promoting university sports at global stage.’

The Brazilian delegation

More stress was to be found at the race towards the 29th Summer Universiade between two strong candidate cities Brasilia and Taipei City. The Brazilian delegation was headed by the Governor of the Federal District Agnelo Queiroz with the directors of the University of Brasilia (UnB) while Taipei City’s delegation was headed by Mayor Hau Lung-bin who was joined by several Ministers of the Chinese Taipei Government.

The Taipei City delegation

After careful evaluation the FISU Board attributed the 2017 Summer Universiade to Taipei City, Chinese Taipei.

‘I thank FISU for choosing my city to host the 2017 Summer Universiade', Mayor Hau said. ‘After bidding five times to get the Games we finally got them! We promise a close collaboration with FISU to make these Games one of the best Universiades in FISU history.’

FISU President Gallien added: ‘A lot of the EC members were convinced of the quality of the bidding book and the presentation and preparations of Taipei City. The National University Sport Federation of Chinese Taipei is a very active one. It has hosted many World University Championships, it will host the Forum in 2012 and now FISU’s flagship event, the Universiade, in 2017. I’m confident Taipei City will deliver some wonderful Games.’
