McClaren returns to Twente

Former England boss Steve McClaren believes he has an 'ideal opportunity' after returning to FC Twente on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

McClaren quickly emerged as the favourite to succeed Co Adriaanse, who was sacked on Tuesday by the Eredivisie club, despite reports of interest in Avram Grant, and the appointment was confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

The 50-year-old led Twente to the first Eredivisie title in their history in his second season before leaving to take charge of Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in May 2010.

McClaren was sacked in Germany less than a year later and his most recent post was at Nottingham Forest, who appointed him last June on a three-year deal.

However, he resigned in October with Forest just one point and one place above the Championship relegation zone.

McClaren told Sky Sports of his return to Twente: "I left, obviously, on a high with the title. I said at that time that I would be back. I didn't know when, but I would be back.

"The club is still developing, still growing and I think this is an ideal opportunity for me to go back and finish what we were starting."

He added: "I know the club very well. I know the people at the top. I can work with the people at the top.

"I think that is the most important thing. I had a good relationship with them the last time. I know where the club is coming from.

"I know what their vision is. I know what their ambitions are. It is still there. That was the key thing for me."
