Tottenham Spurs were at the centre of dramatic deadline-day trading, with their sale of Roman Pavlyuchenko to Lokomotiv Moscow for £7.5m permitting a late flurry of striker moves.
Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, replaced the Russia international with Louis Saha from Everton, on a short-term contract until the end of the season, with the option of a further year, and the Merseyside club concluded their long-running search for a striker with the signing of Nikica Jelavic from Glasgow Rangers for £6m.
The prolific Croatia international was paraded on the Goodison Park pitch at half-time during the victory over Manchester City.
Tottenham and Everton were among the busiest clubs on the final day of the window. Redknapp said his centre-half Sébastien Bassong, who had been a target for QPR, was joining Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan for the remainder of the season and he was hopeful of replacing him with Ryan Nelsen of Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer also until the end of the season. Redknapp, who loaned the full-back Vedran Corluka to Bayer Leverkusen, wanted the cover in central defence because he said that William Gallas was "out long-term" with a calf injury.
Redknapp tried and failed to sign Milos Krasic from Juventus on loan but has sanctioned the loan of Steven Pienaar back to Everton. "Pienaar wants to go," Redknapp said. "I was going to bring the boy on loan from Juventus but it won't happen.
"We've lost three again [to injury] against Wigan. Kyle Walker did a groin, Rafa van der Vaart a calf and Emmanuel Adebayor's done a hamstring. We got decent money for Pavlyuchenko and Saha is bright … he gives me another striker."
Everton made inquiries for the Fiorentina winger Alessio Cerci, AEK Athens's central defender Kostas Manolas and the Paris St-Germain striker Guillaume Hoarau but it was the capture of Jelavic on a four-and-a-half-year contact that realised his priority.
